Amazon.com Product Description
The Panasonic ES8249K Arc IV Nano Vortex Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaving System features a four-blade system, along with a linear motor, pivoting head, and other innovative technologies to deliver an outstandingly close and comfortable shave. And thanks to the HydraClean feature, your shaver will always be clean and ready to go.

The four-blade system provides 32-percent more cutting surface than previous models. View larger.
Linear Motor Offers Maximum Power
The ES8249K features a linear motor that achieves an astounding 13,000 revolutions per minute. Even the thickest beards are no match for the shaver, and you'll experience a frictionless shave with less pulling and irritation.

Four-Blade Design for Extra-Close Shaves
A four-blade design offers comfort and support while delivering great performance. This four-blade shaver provides 32-percent more cutting surface than previous models, giving better coverage with less irritation. The foils and blades are arced to gently nestle into the skin to achieve maximum closeness.

The blades are angled at 30 degrees for the sharpest cut in the industry. The blades are also polished with Nano Technology for even better cutting performance.

Wet/Dry Design Lets you Shave in the Shower
The wet/dry design of the shaver means you can easily clean your shaver by simply rinsing it under running water. The Vortex has a cleaning mode that speeds the motor up to 17,000 RPMs for quick and easy cleaning.

The wet/dry functionality also gives you the option of shaving wet with lather while in the shower, in addition to dry shaving when you need a touch up on the run.

HydraClean Automatically Cleans Your Shaver
Panasonic's innovative HydraClean feature automatically keeps your shaver clean and hygienic all the time. With the intelligent base, you can clean, charge, and dry your razor. The cleaning system uses an alcohol-free water/detergent infused cleaning process that removes debris to keep the blades fresh. A heating element gets rid of all wetness and moisture for an extra-dry shaving head.

Rechargeable Battery Saves Money and Reduces Waste
An internal rechargeable battery means you don't have to wastefully buy and throw out batteries. The shaver gets about 14 shaves on a one-hour charge, and a handy battery monitor lets you know how much charge is remaining at all times. A convenient five-minute quick charge option lets you quickly charge up for a single shave.

International Voltage Conversion
With an automatic voltage conversion feature, you can take the shaver wherever you go and not worry about voltage converters; just plug it in and you're all set to go. A travel pouch is included with the shaver.

The Panasonic ES8249K Arc IV shaver measures 2.4 x 6.3 x 1.8 inches.

3 out of 5 stars Go with rotary shavers...   August 25, 2010
Ilias Konstantinidis (San Francisco, CA United States)
I've owned this shaver for more than a year and I am quite disappointed with it's performance for the crazy amount of money I spent on it. I've owned rotary shavers (Norelco's, with the 3 round razors) and they worked amazingly well. Having read the reviews of this shaver (and that Philips bought Norelco) I thought these should work as well and I liked the including cleaning system. They do not. I have to spend about 5 times the amount of time to get a good shave (usually about 10 minutes) that I did with the Norelco's and I even tend to miss some spots which I come back to after. I never had that issue with the Norelco. I would have been clean shaved in a minute or two.
Indeed the trimmer on both the Norelco and this is useless. You have to get a separate trimmer.
As far as the cleaning system, I am not sure how good of a cleaning job it does anyway, and it is kinda noisy. For the Norelco, I would rinse everything with water and then use a Norelco razor lubricant spray dealio every now and then.
I do regret spending this much money on this shaver. I suggest you look at Norelco's or some 3-razor shaving system.

3 out of 5 stars Questionable Longevity   August 14, 2010
Ed (Fairfax, VA)
This shaver works well but I'm not sure how long the LCD will last. After using a Norelco shaver for many years, I tried the ES8249K and it does provide a closer shave; I've actually nicked myself a couple of times on areas with very dry skin.

I purchased this shaver in August 2009. In December 2009 I noticed that the LCD was no longer working properly -- when the timer and the charge percentage were displayed, other LCD indicators were lit. Eventually, all of the LCD indicators stayed on all the time. Panasonic provided me with a reconditioned unit that worked fine.

It's now August 2010 and the LCD indicators are exhibiting the same behavior again; the razor still works, but it looks like it's time for another replacement.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic Shaver   June 14, 2010

I have been a fan of Panasonic wet shavers now for years. Got this unit on Amazon at a great price. Almost cheaper to buy a new unit vs. replacement blades

5 out of 5 stars Great Razor - Panasonic ES8249K Arc Vortex   May 22, 2010

Update 19 AUGUST:
I've had this razor for 3 or 4 months now and I continue to LOVE it!!! I get a much closer shave than I EVER did with my Braun. I have a coarse beard and even a 3 day beard growth is NO problem. Usually takes me about 6 minutes for a perfet shave. The only nit pick is that sometimes the razor head cover doesn't snap on (it feels a little cheap) but it's perfectly durable. I wrote about an issue I had with 1 spot on my neck in my original review - I've learned how to hold it. My approach angle was bad. This is the best electric razor I have owned to date and I've owned quite a few top-of the line Brauns. Would recommend this to anyone and would purchase it again when the time came.

Original Review:
I purchased the Panasonic after my Braun Series 7's head lock broke after 2 years of use. A little disappointed given the price point and decided I would give the Panasonic a try.

First of all, I have a very heavy, thick and dense beard. I've got stubble a couple of hours after shaving. I charged up the Panasonic out of the box, gave it a good overnight charge and I have 2 words - baby's butt! That's how close the shave was... Now granted it's a new foil and razor compared to my Braun, but I don't recall ever getting a shave _this_ close with my Braun, even after changing the head cartridge. I like the cleaning cartridges better b/c they do not use alcohol and they take up less waste in the trash. I like the leather pouch that came with the Panasonic vs the plastic case that case with the Braun. However, the Braun came with a much nicer, coiled cord. In addition to the shave being super close, the only problem I had was literally 2-3 hairs on my neck. The Braun didn't do a great job in this area either but I think a little better than the Panasonic. But no razor burn or irritation so that's a definite plus. The shaver is also quieter but the cleaning time takes forever!!

Pros
* Cartridges use less space in landfill
* The shave is great
* Price point excellent
* Nice case
* Quiet (in comparison with my Braun)

Cons
* Cleaning station takes forever
* No coiled cord

5 out of 5 stars Don't Know Of A Better Shaver   May 9, 2010

I previously used a Braun shaver but switched to this wet/dry shaver about five years ago. I have had two or three since then because one of our puppies attacked one of them and I upgraded once or twice. I don't know of a better shaver. Shave is closer than using a blade.

This model was a big improvement over the pervious Panasonic wet/dry shaver I owned. I believe it has an additional blade that is not n all of the other Panasonic models. That's extra blade really does make a huge difference.

What I like best is that I can use it in the shower. My face neck to get irritated and red after shaving. That's almost entirely gone now. I used shaving cream from Maximum Comfort Shave Cream Jar from Lab Series with this razor. Before I shave, I also use Lab Series Multi-Action Face Wash. I like those products but you can use others. But I find that the combination of cleaning and using a good shave cream prepares my beard for shaving and helps me get a close shave. When I'm just about done shaving my neck, I stick my neck under the shower stream while I am shaving and that really gets the the closest shave without cuasing irritation.

Battery life on these shavers is so-so. I don't shave every day. Usually every other day or every third day. I can usually get three or four shaves from one battery charge.

I don't use the cleaning cartridges all the time. I usually clean the blades by using the cleanining speed, which makes the blade vibrate. You just press down on the power button for a few seconds and it goes into cleaning speed. You stick the blade under the water. This seems to keep the blades pretty clean. Once a week or once eveyr two weeks, I use the cleaning cartidge. The cleaning cartdirdges are a lot easier to use than the Braun system, which as of five years ago required you use a cleaning cartidge with special fluid. That fluid was kind of gross and oily. The Panasonic system just uses water. I resent having to buy the cleaning cartidges, which filters the water. So I just use the manual cleaning method explained above.

Travelling with his razor is easy. It comes with a travel case.

My 16 year old son starte shaving a few months ago and has been stealing my razor. So I'm going to buy him a Father's Day gift by getting myself another one of these shavers. I just checked the Panasonic site and saw that this model is available in a "blowout sale." I'm hoping that means Panasonic will be coming out with a new, improved model. I don't know that it will, so this is pureely speculation by me. But I think I'll wait a couple of weeks to see if they launch a new model for Father's Day.
