4 out of 5 stars Finally, a cute animatronic critter...but get some accessories...   December 30, 2009

I have been seeing the trends as various animatronic pets have come along over the years (from the basic barking/walking dog, to Pleo.) My one complaint is that they never disguise it very well that it's a little animal robot--in other words, most aren't that cute.

But these Zhu Zhu Hamsters are adorable, I chose the white one, Chunk, and it's the only I have so far, so I don't know if their personalities really are that different.

I will say that if you get this, you might want to buy another one and/or some accessories for it. The interactions the hamster will have in the various playhouses, tunnels, wheels, slides, cars, etc. is what really makes this more entertaining. (And I say that from both my adult perspective, and making a reasonable guess about how much a youth would enjoy it.)

***A final note: I can't seem to edit the star rating on the educational value. I'm not sure why I initially gave it 3 stars, as I don't really consider it all that educational.***

4 out of 5 stars One delighted 7 year old here.   December 30, 2009

I had very low expectations for these due to consumer whiplash out there and was gladly pleasanly surprised. I think they are made much sturdier than I was expecting, they were a bit smaller than I origionally expected but are really very cute. We got a chuckle out of hearing them randomly moo or cockadoodle doo. My 7 year old and 2 year old spent a lot of time chrismas morning just chsing them around as they explored the floors. I think it is rather cute how they scurry about, turing around and such.

Santa found these for a very reasonable price and would never stoop to support 3rd party markups. The only people to blame for such mark-ups are the consumers out there clamouring to pay higher prices. Not Amazon and not the toy makers, because they are not getting paid more for those marked up prices the middle man is making the $.

2 out of 5 stars Too much hype   December 30, 2009

I think this is a very over hyped toy. Child lost interest within about 2 minutes. Others in the family compared it to watch the robot vacuum though actually less interesting because it did not pick up dirt. Our child is more interested in toys that she can actually play with, this she can move around, put together, etc.

1 out of 5 stars BE GLAD IF YOU COULDNT GET ONE   December 27, 2009

My mom works at Walmart so she was able to get my sister a Zhu Zhu pet when a new shipment came in the night before Christmas Eve. The thing was fun until it BROKE.

Seriously what can you expect for a $8 toy but now it's been two days since Christmas and the thing won't move anymore. There was one tiny string on the wheel and I took the whole thing apart, cleaned the wheels, changed the batteries and nothing! This was a waste. My sister didn't even know what it was.

For those who couldn't find them, be glad it doesn't last and isn't worth it. I really hate it for the people who went all out and bought all the accessories and stuff. Luckily we didn't.

These toys were clearly cheaply made and I really feel bad for the suckers who paid 3 and 4 times the retail price just so their kids could be happy.

Very dissapointing.

1 out of 5 stars RIP OFF!!!   December 26, 2009

I purchased this Zhu Zhu pet and paid over $[...] dollars for it! I thought I was shopping on Amazon who is a retailer like Toys R Us, I didn't know that I was actually purchasing this item on a "marked" up basis like ebay. These toys sell for $[...] in Toys R Us and they had plenty of them. Amazon should alert the buyer that they are buying through a third party and not Amazon. I will never shop their site again for ANYTHING.
